-When Baiting for bear with a barrel, block the entrance with logs and soak the logs with grease, any attractant you perfer, bear magnet(What we use), jelly..etc.. So when they have to move the logs the grease or attractant gets on their fur. Then when they leave your spot and walk around, they scent from your pile is still on them, other bears smell it and follow it back to your pile. Happy hunting. -Mike

- This one has been drilled into your head by everyone by now. But Practice Makes Perfect! Try and shoot at least 5 shots a day and try shooting from kneeling and sitting position also, you will never know what shot opprotunity a deer will give you in the woods. -Mike

This buck we call "Screw" (Left) hitting the mock scrape I made with Buck Bomb. Buck is fired up. When makeing a mock scrape, pick a spot on a trail with a over hanging licking branch. Clear the leaves and make the spot about a foot and a half each way and pour buck urine in that spot. Other bucks will come and be fired up that another buck is marking their territory or their turf, then that buck will pee in it and freshen the scrape (Like the buck "Towers" (Right)). -Mike

This Year we've had unseasonally warm temperatures for December, today it 68 degrees and we were walking around the woods in shorts and tshirt. When its warm, Bear dont want to move throughout the day. If they move in daylight hours, it will be first light or last light. Persistence is key, put your time in. NJ Shotgun season is 1 week, and the whole week was hot. Thats like you wearing Sweatshirt and pants for 2 months in 45 degree weather then all of sudden it hits 65-70 and your going to be sweating. First and last light will be your best chances. I took this 230lb Live Weight, 197.5lb dressed bear yesterday at 4:35pm. Last light. So Hunt Smart. -Mike

The end of December and Early January are approaching, which means cold weather. And with this years acorns abundance running low for the deer, They are going to be seeking other food sources. So hunting food sources will be your Best bet at takeing a buck late season. Whether your hunting a corn pile or corn field, they're drained from the rut and need to replenish. Hunt the food and odds will be in your favor.

This weeks tip is on, Coyote Calling. When Calling in Coyote, You need to be 100% Scent free! Put some thought into picking a set. You want to set up where a coyote can only approach from in front of you or to the sides of you, Be sure that the only way that they can come in is UPWIND so they wont smell you. Its incredibly hard to draw a bow on a coyote when they are comeing in, their keen eyes will pick you out and theyll be gone. So if you want it o be easier, use a gun but if you like the challenge like me, use the bow. Now you can use a electronic or mouth call its your own personal preference. WIth an electronic call it keeps playing and they will be focused on the call and not you drawing the bow. So Scent Free, Make sure they can only come in upwind, be careful with your movement, and call for at least 45 minutes.

Your Target Buck Nocturnal? Learned from past experienced, Big Bucks avoid coming to food in daylight hours in NJ. But i've found days when there is a cold front, low pressure rolling in, The big boys seem to get on their feet and come in earlier. They may only come in rigth at the last minute but its just enough time to shoot him. So days in the light rain, its worth it to sit! I killled an 131" 6 pointer on a day where it was drizzleing all day, started to down pour so i lowered my bow to get down the tree and as i did that 6 does cruised in. So I hiked it back up the tree, After the does came in. The Beast of a 6 followed, i renocked the arrow and drew and shot. Sit the rain and the luck may be on your side. -Mike

January 10th, and the temperature has been flucuateing every few days from 25 degrees to 60 degrees. Normally the second rut kicks in middle of December but with this years unseasonably warm temps, 2nd rut is in full swing. Put your time in, put out some tinks, Signal 11 Lures Freezer FIller is what we use this time of year. Bucks go nuts over it. Try a little grunting and you can have a late season bruiser cruiseing towards ya.-Mike

When setting up a blind, if your hunting a mature buck, Brush in your blind! You want to be invisible, big bucks know their environment and what it looks like. If there is something out of place, they will know and spook. And if they really dont like the looks of it, you may not see them back for a while. Make your blind blend in to the surroundings. BE INVISIBLE. -Mike

I am a firm believer in scent killer spray. But most hunters spray it on at home and store it away. Then when they go to use it they get a whole bunch of scents on it. Bring the Scent Killer to the tree and when you get to the tree or blind, Then Spray it because it work on contact. Spray it on when you get to your spot and it will work better.

Fishing rising water is always better then fishing falling water levels. like during a light rain, the bass move up and sit by new structures that they have access to. Best to throw crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits or topwater.

When Setting up or checking Deer spots in the summer, BE SURE NOT to check that spot to frequently! If you bump your big buck, he may not return. you want that spot to be his safe haven. Check your cams once a week, or even 2 weeks during the summer.

PEAK RUT right now in NJ! Bucks are chasing everywhere, rutting hard. Be sure When attempting to rattle in a bruiser, Make sure you set up right. More specifically, try to set up where the only way the buck can come in is up wind. Bucks will almost always circle down wind to try and identify what bucks are fighting. They will use every sense they have before actually coming in. Try to actually paint a picture of 2 bucks fighting, then one trying to breed a doe. Some tending grunts followed by an breeding grunt, then maybe throw some estrous bleats in. If you got a buck hung up out of range, Snort wheeze at him and it will fire that buck up. Rut On!

Its that time of year where bucks are herded back up, In some areas deer are starting to shed. But in Central NJ My deer normally hold their headgear till early march. Last day of Some zones is Feb. 18th, SO THERES STILL TIME. Buck's minds are in their stomach this time of year. Get out some Pinch Point by A&W, or corn, or pumpkins. Any main food source will be a magnet for Bucks.
